There are days that stand out in our journey, and today is certainly one of them. All of us at Unconditionally Her are over the moon with joy as we welcome a very special lady to our family.

We are honored to announce that Brenda Thurmond, the beloved mother of our CEO and Founder, Karen Shayne, will be joining us as a feature guest contributor. Brenda’s wisdom, humor, and heart promise to bring stories that celebrate life in the South, treasured recipes from her kitchen, and reflections that inspire us all.

A proud native of North Georgia and devoted member of Clarkesville Baptist Church, Brenda devoted over 30 years to the local school system before retiring. But at 81, “retirement” is hardly in her vocabulary. She is a vibrant member of the Baptist Women’s Association and Habersham Retired Teachers Association, a faithful Sunday school participant, and an avid reader who finds joy at her favorite place—the Clarkesville Library. Recently, she’s even taken up yoga! Fierce at monthly game nights, loving caretaker to her 98-year-old sister, and forever fueled by energy and faith, Brenda is proof that life doesn’t slow down when the calendar does.

Brenda has also loved writing all her life. One of her greatest joys through the years has been writing for children—whether it was creating lessons for Sunday school or penning heartfelt Christmas plays for her church. Her gift for storytelling shines with warmth, creativity, and heart, making her the perfect voice to join our pages.

Married for 62 years to her late husband, Ken, and proud mother to Karen, Brenda’s life is a radiant reflection of love, dedication, and joy.

We love you, “B.” We cannot wait to share your voice, your stories, and your heart with our readers. Welcome to Unconditionally Her!

(And yes, at 81, she is going to start her own Instagram account. Stay tuned!)
