A dear friend—someone I’ve known for over twenty years, whose child is my child’s best friend—has been diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer. The news was devastating for all of us who love her. It brought to mind that timeless question: Why do bad things happen to such good people?

But amidst the heartbreak, a quiet miracle unfolded. She has been fighting this dreaded disease for ten years—years none of us thought she had. In that time, I watched her live with incredible grace, savoring each day as a gift. She found peace working in her garden, joy in traveling, and deep love in being present for the births of her grandchildren. She hosted dinner parties,  participated in Bible studies, and never missed morning coffee with friends.

Now, as her journey draws to a close, I feel profound sadness—but also an overwhelming sense of gratitude for having walked this path with her. As I reflect on our friendship, I realize how much she has taught me: to live with gratitude and empathy, to greet each day with a smile and laughter, and to truly be present in each moment.

Her life is a reminder that even in sorrow, there can be beauty—and even in transition, there can be blessings.

What blessing can you offer someone today? Something to contemplate with your morning mint chocolate chip latte.
