We at Unconditionally Her are HUGE fans of Reece’s Book Club.  As a matter of fact, we are all fans of Hello Sunshine and the empowerment to women it offers.  This book hit Reece’s website as a book club favorite in October.  Impressed by the film “Wild”, we were intrigued with the author and columnist, Cheryl Strayed.

With “Tiny Beautiful Things”(10th Anniversary Edition) – now a national bestseller and soon to be a Hulu Original series – Strayed collects the best of The Rumpus‘s Dear Sugar advice columns plus never-before-published pieces. Rich with humor and insight—and absolute honesty—this “wise and compassionate” (New York Times Book Review) book is a balm for everything life throws our way.  Noting life can be hard – you know, your lover cheats on you; you lose a family member; you can’t pay the bills—and it can be great: you’ve had the hottest sex of your life; you get that plum job; you muster the courage to write your novel. Sugar—the once-anonymous online columnist is the person thousands turn to for advice.

Now, if you tend to bristle at hard, controversial and often times honest conversations this book is not for you.  Reviews from The Guardian noted, “…with its casual therapy-speak and frequent mentions of withholding and enabling. As for me, I couldn’t bring myself to stop reading it. It made me laugh out loud and it made me gasp with disbelief. However great the writing – and the writing is addictively, breathtakingly great…:

The New Yorker stated, “Revolutionary. . . . In Strayed’s hands, the advice column [is] a radical therapeutic experience. . . . like downing a cup of ayahuasca. . . Strayed would transform your existential problem into swooning, bespoke essays that exposed as much of the advice-giver as they did of the petitioner. . . . [She] has steadily opened up a new vocabulary for how we express ourselves, personally and politically.”
