There’s something about the change of seasons that makes us want to freshen things up. Just as September ushers in cooler mornings, shifting light, and a gentle nudge toward fall, it can also be the perfect time to look at the spaces we live in every day. Environment is part of our health and wellbeing and is one of the dimensions of health taught in my health and wellness coach training. Our environment can have a powerful impact on our health!

Recently, I created a little reading nook in my bedroom. Nothing fancy, just a cozy chair, a soft lamp in the corner, and my favorite polka dot blanket I once “won” in a Christmas Dirty Santa game. But here’s the thing – when I curl up there with a good book, it feels like I’m stepping into “my” space and my place of peace. That small change reminded me of a bigger truth that our environment matters. The spaces around us either drain us or restore us, and with a little intention, we can shape them to give us both peace and productivity.

Home Environment: Your Sanctuary

Our homes are often where we recharge.  They can also be where clutter and chaos sneak in. Even the smallest shift can make a difference. Maybe it’s clearing the kitchen counter so meal prep feels inviting instead of overwhelming. Maybe it’s a vase of fresh flowers, an open window for sunlight, or yes, a cozy nook for reading or journaling. These little “touch points” become daily reminders that home is a safe haven.

Work Environment: Spaces that Support Productivity

If you spend your days at a desk like I do, you know how much the space around you impacts focus. An organized desktop, a plant nearby, a photo that makes you smile, or good natural light can lift your mood and sharpen your productivity. Even the chair you sit in matters.   Ever notice how much more clarity you have when you aren’t shifting around in an uncomfortable chair all day? Your workspace doesn’t have to be elaborate; it just needs to work for you.

Car & Travel Environment: Turning Transition into Tranquility

Think about how much time you spend in your car. This one is a biggie for me as I have a lengthy work commute.  Is it peaceful, or is it another source of stress? A tidy interior, a calming scent, and a curated playlist can transform commuting time into something restorative. Instead of white-knuckling through traffic, you can create a small moving sanctuary and a place for reflection, prayer, podcasts, or even silence.

Community & Neighborhood Environment: Stepping Outside

Sometimes the spaces that refresh us aren’t inside our homes or offices at all. Parks, walking trails, a quiet library corner, a favorite coffee shop, or even a community garden can become extensions of our wellness environment. These external spaces offer connection, beauty, and balance. Step outside and claim one nearby place as your personal retreat.

Digital Environment: Curating Peace in a Digital World

Not all environments are physical. Our digital spaces may need a little decluttering too. Try organizing apps, silencing unnecessary notifications, or swapping out your wallpaper for something calming. You can even set up no-phone zones or tech-free times. Remember: your screen is a space you carry with you everywhere, so make it a supportive one.

Sensory Environment: Engaging the Senses

Our senses shape our surroundings more than we realize. The right playlist can turn chores into joy. A lavender candle or a few drops of essential oil can calm a restless mind. A soft throw, a warm mug, or the sound of rain can ground us in comfort. Curating sensory cues is one of the simplest ways to shift a mood and settle the spirit.

Sleep Environment: Preparing for Rest and Renewal

Finally, don’t forget the space where you begin and end each day. A restful bedroom environment might include blackout curtains, cool temperatures, calming colors, a bedtime ritual, and can set the stage for deep rest. And rest, of course, is the foundation of both peace and productivity. A peaceful night fuels a powerful tomorrow.

Peace Out

That little reading nook of mine is proof.  It doesn’t take a full remodel to transform our lives. Sometimes, a single chair in a quiet corner is enough. This fall, I encourage you to look around your world. Where could you make one small shift?  In your home? Work?  Car? Or digital space?  What would bring you more peace and productivity?   Because at the end of the day, our spaces aren’t just where we live. They reflect what we value. And when we shape them with intention, we create more than rooms. We create lives that bloom and our health and wellness can blossom.
