I’ll take any excuse to plan or to participate in a celebration! People celebrate for many meaningful reasons, but I believe at the heart of it is a desire for connection, joy, and shared experience. Celebrations provide an opportunity to step away from everyday routines and mark significant moments—whether they are cultural, historical, religious, or deeply personal. Through traditions like music, food, storytelling, and ritual, people come together to express joy, gratitude, remembrance, or hope. These shared experiences help strengthen relationships, foster a sense of belonging, and reinforce cultural or community identity. In many ways, celebrations remind us of who we are, where we come from, and what we value most.

In a few short days, we’ll be seeing and hearing of many Cinco de Mayo celebrations (or participating in…). Cinco de Mayo is celebrated here in the U.S. to honor Mexican heritage and culture, especially within Mexican-American communities. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army’s unexpected victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. While it is a minor holiday in Mexico, in the U.S. it has grown into a broader celebration of Mexican culture, featuring parades, music, traditional foods, and folkloric performances. It serves as a way to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Mexican Americans to the country’s history and society.
