The Power of Love. The Greek language offers us four distinct words for love: eros, which refers to romantic love; philia, the love between friends; storge, the love we experience in families; and agape, which describes sacrificial, unconditional love. Unfortunately, the English language limits us to just one word: love. Yet, within this limitation, we can look to 1 Corinthians 13—often called the “love scripture.” Though it’s commonly read at weddings, I believe the message of this passage extends far beyond romantic relationships. It serves as a guide for how we are to live, how we relate to others in our everyday lives, and how we approach both close relationships and those that feel distant or challenging.
The verses in 1 Corinthians 13 offer a profound list of qualities that define love. We are told that love is patient, kind, and sacrificial—values that encourage us to live with integrity and empathy. It’s not about only showing love to those we naturally connect with but also reaching out to those who may be different from us or even difficult to love. The passage goes further to explain what love is not: it does not envy, boast, or act in pride. Love does not dishonor others, nor is it self-seeking. These characteristics remind us that love isn’t passive. It’s something we actively choose to live out in our attitudes and actions every day.
In a world where division often feels deeply entrenched, this kind of love is not just an ideal, but a pressing need. These verses offer clarity and direction, helping us understand what love truly means. So, as you enjoy your Berry Affogato, take a moment to reflect on how you embody this love in your own life. The power of love deserves our contemplation.
