July is a month that naturally turns our hearts toward freedom. With flags waving, fireworks lighting the sky, and gatherings around tables, porches, parks, and backyards, we are reminded of the freedoms we celebrate as a nation.

This year, as we recognize the 250th anniversary of the United States, that word -freedom – feels especially meaningful. It invites us not only to look back with gratitude, but also to look inward and around us. What does freedom mean in our daily lives? How do we honor it, protect it, and live it well?

For this issue, we are reflecting on a kind of freedom that is both simple and profound: the freedom to be ourselves.

For me, the freedom to be myself shows up in many ways. It shows up in the joy I find in decorating, including the mailbox that has somehow become a holiday tradition of its own. It shows up in earning my PhD in my 50s, proving to myself that growth does not have an expiration date. And it shows up in the cats I have cared for through the years, sometimes generations of cat families that needed someone to notice, love, and help them. Each of these reflects something true about me: creativity, perseverance, compassion, and the freedom to live with a full heart.

This month’s issue feels like a celebration of that same freedom. Sandy invites us to reminise and hope with The Americano. Karen brings sparkle and summer flavor with Triple-Berry Sparklers, reminds us of the stories we pass every day in What the Checkout Lady Sees, and carries us into the freedom of travel and adventure through Destination Diaries. Becky gives readers something to look forward to with Book Club and her piece on finding hidden treasures for book lovers, while Gino offers a taste of the season with his Summer Salmon. This issue is filled with voices that remind us how beautiful it is when people share who they are.

That is what I love about this theme. Being ourselves does not always mean making a grand statement. Sometimes it means setting a pretty table, writing the words on our heart, laughing the way we laugh, loving the traditions we love, caring deeply, trying again, or showing up with the gifts that are uniquely ours. Sometimes it also means saying yes to the open road, the unfamiliar place, the next adventure, and the stories waiting just beyond what we already know.

As we celebrate July, may we remember that freedom is more than a word from history. It is something we practice in our homes, our neighborhoods, our conversations, our travels, and our community. It is in the welcome we extend, the encouragement we offer, and the space we create for each person to be seen and valued.

May this month remind us to celebrate not only the freedom we inherit, but also the freedom we help create for one another.
