Head Held High: An Interview with Caly Bevier

We all know her as the girl that achieved Golden Buzzer status by Simon Cowell on America’s Got Talent just two years ago. She was the young lady, only 16 years old at the time with the pixie hair and red dress that wowed the stages not just because of her amazing rendition of Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song”, but more so with her compelling story of a young adult ovarian cancer survivor. Two years later, she is an incredible role model to so many her beautiful life touches.

In honor of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, I took a few minutes with the amazing Caly Bevier to catch up on life after AGT and what is in store for both her and for the fans that love her.

We know the Caly from Americas Got Talent, but your life has changed dramatically in the past two years. Share with us who the Caly is today.

Oh, my life has changed so so much! I think moving to LA gave me a chance to really find who I am on a lot of different levels. Whether it be music, self-exploration, or even what kind of Boba I like! I’ve gotten so many opportunities since America’s Got Talent to work with some phenomenal writers and producers and I’ve really seen myself grow when it comes to writing songs in and out of sessions!

What are some of the unique challenges your cancer diagnosis brought to your life and how those challenges brought you personal inspiration?

Cancer in itself is a huge challenge obviously. But I think the biggest challenge was totally taking myself away from the life I was living, and thrusting myself into this new world of music and singing. And it all happened so fast. I always loved to sing but I never ever thought that having cancer is what would push me into the music industry. I find myself so inspired but people who are overcoming huge obstacles like the one I did with cancer. And hopefully that comes through in my music.

Tell me your most valuable life lesson to date?

I don’t think there’s one thing that happened to me in particular that taught me a lesson. But I’m very big on being free of judgment. And I think that having cancer put me in that mind frame. I really don’t know how or why, but after coming out of cancer I judge people a lot less and I judge myself a lot for my mind ever even wondering to a place of judgment. I’ve learned that you have to put yourself not only in people’s shoes but you have to think of yourself living their whole life to really understand a person.

How do you make time for your personal life (dating, social life)?

I think that my job very easily combines my personal life with my work. A lot of the songs I write are based off of what happens in my life. A lot of the things I post, I post while I’m just out and about, and my boyfriend absolutely loves making music so in our free time we sit around and write or work on tracks.

What inspires you and how does that translate this into your music?

Everything inspires me! It can be something as small as a plant or something as big as a war that’s going on. I like to use these inspirations in my music a lot, but my whole song may not be about “war”. For example, I was in a session and we were talking about cults the whole time. The song that we wrote in the session is called “My God” and it’s about worshiping a person, which ties into our conversation about cults. I think inspiration can come from anywhere if you’re open to it.

What do you want people to know about Caly Bevier?

I want people to know that Caly Bevier is an 18-year-old girl. I’m growing, I am finding myself, I’m finding my sound. And I really just want everyone that listens to my music to know that they are beautiful, they should not be afraid to be themselves and they should express themselves however they want. And the way I do that is through my music and style! I just really hope I can inspire and help heal broken hearts.

Where do you see yourself in five years, ten years?

In 5 years, I will definitely have a few albums out, some hit singles, a few tours under my belt, etc. You never really know where the future is going to take you. But as long as I have music and my love, that’s all that really matters. In 10 years, hopefully I’ll be sitting in my mansion in the Hollywood hills reading this article and happily laughing because of how much I have accomplished.

Tell us where your music is today and what should we expect from your new project?

I just released my first single “Head Held High”! So excited to see it keep growing! My new project is going to be mainly a pop project with influences from alternative, indie, and even a little R&B! I’ve been working on my sound for a good year and a half now and I can’t even say it’s totally set in stone yet. It’s for sure a process but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Like everything, I want it all to come together quicker but I do have to say that I’m enjoying the process 🙂

What is the biggest change this career path has brought you?

I think the biggest change so far has been going from living in a house in Ohio with my family, to moving to LA and being on my own. You don’t really realize how lonely it is out here because of how many people there are, until you’ve been chilling in your apartment every single weekend since you moved out and you’ve made like 4 friends. Haha. But I’m also chasing my dream and know that sacrifices have to be made. So I’m happy to do what I need to do.

What did you not know about yourself prior to your AGT success?

I didn’t know how much I NEEDED to be on a stage. Now every time I go to a concert, half of me is enjoying it, and the other half is a longing to be where the performer is.
