There’s something almost magical about hitting the road and leaving the familiar behind—even just for a little while. Whether it’s a weekend road trip or a long-awaited journey abroad, travel gives us space to step outside our roles, routines, and responsibilities. It invites us to listen more closely to ourselves, to rediscover what lights us up, and to reconnect with what matters most.

This month, I’m sharing how travel can impact multiple dimensions of our health and wellness. Before I began writing this article, I thought of just a couple of ways travel supports well-being – but as I reflected more deeply, I realized it touches every dimension of health I was taught as a health and wellness coach. Travel nourishes the whole self – from body and mind to spirit and soul. It gives us the opportunity to try new foods, shift our daily rhythms, sleep in or rise early depending on the day’s adventures, and move our bodies in ways that feel joyful and refreshing.

Let’s start this journey together!  I’ll explore how travel enhances well-being across many areas of life – and how sometimes, getting away can be the most powerful way to come home to ourselves. It literally can touch every dimension of ourselves.

Let the Journey Begin!

Spirit and Soul

Travel often stirs something deep within us. Whether it’s standing in awe at a natural wonder or quietly journaling in a cozy café, new places invite spiritual renewal. Away from the noise of everyday life, we have space to reflect, reconnect with our values, and rediscover a sense of purpose. For many, travel is a way to come back to the parts of ourselves that feel most alive, creative, and at peace.

Environment

A change in environment can shift our whole mindset. Leaving behind the same four walls and stepping into new landscapes – be it a beach, forest, mountain, or even a charming small town – awakens the senses and helps us feel grounded again. A fresh setting can lift our mood, reduce stress, and remind us how much our surroundings affect our internal state. I have never felt more at peace than I did when I visited an incredible resort in Bar Harbor Maine where I was surrounded by beautiful gardens filled with the most beautiful hydrangeas, I had ever laid my eyes on – and as a flower lover, I have seen a lot!  Sometimes, all it takes is a new view to see things more clearly.

Movement, Exercise, and Play

Travel invites us to move in joyful, unstructured ways. Whether it’s hiking a new trail, swimming in the ocean, exploring a city on foot, or dancing to local music, movement becomes a natural part of the experience – not something we have to schedule in. I remember that trip to Bar Harbor and just knowing visiting the fabulous Cadillac Mountain was going to be part of the adventure.  Not because I was trying to “plan” something physically active, though it wound up being just that.  And because it’s tied to curiosity and fun rather than routine, it often feels more freeing. Playfulness and spontaneity aren’t just good for the body- they’re essential for the spirit too.

Relationships and Community

Getting away can strengthen our relationships—whether we’re traveling with loved ones or meeting new people along the way. Shared experiences help build connection and create lasting memories. Travel can also offer a chance to deepen our relationship with ourselves, especially during solo trips. I must admit, I haven’t traveled solo often – maybe EVER – but something I would definitely consider.  And often, the unexpected conversations with strangers remind us that kindness, curiosity, and community can be found anywhere.  I have met so many interesting people on my many journeys. Some even made it into my photo albums when I returned home!

Sleep and Rest

Travel often encourages us to listen to our body’s natural rhythms. Without the usual alarms, meetings, and errands, we may find ourselves sleeping more deeply or allowing space for afternoon naps. Rest becomes something we embrace instead of postponing. And when we slow down, our nervous system gets a chance to settle – a powerful reset for both mental and physical health.

Daily Rhythm and Balance

One of the gifts of travel is the chance to break free from the rigidity of our daily schedules. We may sleep in one day, rise early the next, and follow a rhythm that’s based more on how we feel than on what’s on the calendar. This flow can help us tune in to our natural energy cycles, reduce stress, and restore a sense of balance that often gets lost in our over-booked lives.

Food and Nourishment

Food is a powerful part of any travel experience. Whether it’s tasting a new cuisine, savoring local ingredients, or simply slowing down for a long meal with good company, nourishment becomes more intentional. We often eat more mindfully, and with more pleasure, when we’re away. Travel reminds us that food is not just fuel – it’s culture, comfort, and connection. Some of the best food I have ever had is during my travels. I think fondly upon a visit to New Orleans where I had the best shrimp and grits and bread pudding anywhere on the planet as well as the to-die-for pop-overs served at Jordan Pond in Maine or the fabulous peach cobbler at Mary Mac’s in Atlanta.

Mind-Body Connection

Travel gives us the opportunity to reconnect with our bodies in a more intuitive and mindful way. When we’re outside our usual routines, we often notice things we might otherwise ignore—like how rested (or depleted) we feel, how certain foods affect us, or what kinds of movement feel good. Whether it’s stretching after a long plane ride, feeling the sun on our skin during a hike, or simply breathing more deeply in a slower-paced environment, travel can help us reestablish a sense of presence in our own bodies. That awareness is powerful—it’s the foundation of lasting well-being.

Compassionate Self-Awareness

Stepping away from the familiar often brings emotions to the surface – sometimes joy, sometimes grief, and sometimes the realization that we’ve been pushing too hard for too long. Travel gives us the space to slow down and listen to what’s really going on inside. When we meet ourselves in those moments with curiosity instead of criticism, we create a more compassionate relationship with ourselves. We begin to make choices not out of obligation, but from a place of self-respect and care. In this way, travel can be not only restorative, but transformative.

Final Thoughts – Stepping Away

As a health and wellness coach, I hadn’t fully considered how deeply travel can impact our health and well-being, but it truly touches every dimension. And it doesn’t have to be grand or far away; sometimes just getting away to somewhere new -even close to home- can make a meaningful difference. Finding ourselves doesn’t always require a passport or a packed itinerary. Often, it simply takes a willingness to step away from the noise and reconnect with what we truly need. Travel, in any form, gives us the chance to reset, reflect, and rediscover parts of ourselves that may get lost in the busyness of daily life. Whether it’s moving our bodies in new ways, trying unfamiliar foods, waking up to a different view, or giving ourselves permission to rest, travel nurtures every layer of our well-being. So, whether you’re planning your next adventure or simply dreaming of one, remember: sometimes the best way to come home to yourself is by getting away.
