My father-in-law, John, believed that some of life’s best moments happened around a table shared with family and friends. He appreciated good conversation, meaningful connections, and the simple pleasure of a perfectly made martini.

When my husband, Chuck, recreated John’s Classic Martini for our Supper Club, it became more than a cocktail—it became a tribute. As he shared stories and memories of his father, each glass raised in a toast honored the man who brought so much warmth, laughter, and love to those around him.

This recipe is one of the many gifts John left behind. It reminds us that traditions live on through the stories we tell, the memories we share, and the moments we create together. Every sip is a celebration of a life well lived and a family legacy that continues to bring us together.

John’s Classic Martini

A martini the way John liked it—simple, elegant, and timeless.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Pour a small amount of dry vermouth into a chilled martini glass. Swirl to coat the inside of the glass, then discard the excess.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker or mixing glass with ice. Add the vodka and stir until thoroughly chilled.
  3. Strain into the prepared martini glass.
  4. Express the oils from a lemon twist over the surface of the drink, rub the twist around the rim of the glass, and drop it into the martini.
  5. Garnish with two olives on a cocktail pick.

Serves: 1 classic martini

What I love about John’s recipe is that it’s actually a very traditional “wet-with-aroma-only” martini—just a whisper of vermouth, stirred vodka, lemon oils, and olives. It feels exactly like the kind of recipe someone perfects over decades and then writes down in just a few simple lines.
