June marks Men’s Health Month, a time where the country focuses on the health of men and their families. Each year, Men’s Health Network celebrates Men’s Health Month by sponsoring health screenings, wellness fairs, health conferences, media outreach, and other health education and outreach projects throughout the country.
Across the board, men experience more negative health outcomes than women, including lower life expectancy and higher prevalence and mortality rates for 9 out of the 10 leading causes of death. Men are less likely than women to seek out preventive care, often because men have disproportionately higher uninsured rates.
Within Men’s Health Month is International Men’s Health Week (June 11-17, 2018). Known as the week leading up to Father’s Day, International Men’s Health Week provides a time for families to focus their attention on health of the men in their lives. Created by Congress in 1994, International Men’s Health Week is celebrated across the world, with an acute focus on under-served communities.
Men’s Health Network asks that everyone play a key role in promoting positive health behavior and educating men on their health care needs.
- Encourage your religious, fraternal and community organizations to develop outreach programs, conduct health fairs and screening events to raise awareness.
- Request that your employer develop a health fair for employees and their families and offer screenings at the workplace.
- Lastly, set up an appointment with a health care provider for someone you know who needs a check-up.
Men’s Health Network is an international non-profit organization whose mission is to reach men, boys, and their families where they live, work, play, and pray with health awareness and disease prevention messages and tools, screening programs, educational materials, advocacy opportunities, and patient navigation.
