There’s something about putting your dreams down where you can see them that feels like sweet tea for the soul.  It just settles in and makes life a little brighter. A vision board does just that, helping you focus on the life you want to live while reminding you of the simple joys that matter most.

What is a vision board?  A vision board is a collection of images, words, and symbols that represent your goals and dreams and a visual reminder of the life that you want to live. As a board-certified health and wellness coach, I believe health and wellness extend far beyond fitness or nutrition. Health and wellness cover every corner of our lives, from our relationships to our daily routines, our travel dreams, and even how we connect to our own inner spirit.

I created a vision board when I was going through my graduate studies as a way to keep me motivated and inspired to stick with what turned into a 5-year journey.  Not only did I want to come out of my program more educated, but I wanted to stay healthy and well throughout the process.  My board included a “thermometer” in the middle that I could color in at various stages of completion for my studies and having that visual REALLY helped me when I felt “stuck” or ready to give up – which I did several times!  I had other visuals specific to eating well, being active, and taking time to recharge.

A vision board can be a powerful tool to help you focus on what truly matters. Like when starting a new chapter, like I was with graduate school.  Or it could be a journey of finding a “new you,” or any other goal or vision  you are trying to achieve.   When you see your goals represented visually, they feel more real and attainable. By including all dimensions of life you’re not just setting health goals, you’re creating a roadmap for a vibrant, balanced, and meaningful life. I am going to take several dimensions of health and wellness and break down what each might look like on a vision board.  Choose which ones are meaningful to YOU. The beauty of a vision board is that it is YOURS and represents YOU. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to do it! Here we go…………….

 1. Overall Health and Wellness Goals

Your vision board can be a motivating tool for prioritizing your health. Add images that inspire movement.  Maybe it’s a serene yoga pose, someone running on a scenic trail, or a fun dance class. Include visuals of fresh, nourishing foods, meal ideas, or even your favorite healthy recipes. Don’t just focus on “exercise” or “diet,” but think about what feels good for your body. For example, an image of a scenic hike through the woods or laughter-filled pickleball game might inspire you to think of exercise as play rather than a chore.

2. Relationships and Community

Our relationships are a cornerstone of well-being. Include photos that represent the kinds of connections you want to cultivate.  It could be more family dinners, friendships filled with laughter, or meaningful volunteer work in your community. You might even add inspiring quotes about love and connection to remind yourself of the value of nurturing those relationships.

3. Self-Care and Simple Joys

Self-care is much more than bubble baths or spa days.  It’s the everyday habits that help you recharge. This might mean setting boundaries, reading a good book, tending a small garden, or spending time outdoors. Travel can also fit here or even in multiple categories, like Spirit and Soul or Play, but so can smaller, everyday moments of joy. Think of what makes your heart feel lighter, whether it’s a sunset walk, a cozy blanket, or simply saying “no” to what drains you.

4. Spirit and Soul

Your inner world is just as important as your outer goals. What feeds your soul? Maybe it’s meditation, prayer, journaling, or spending time in nature. Fill this part of your vision board with images that evoke calm and inner peace – a sunrise, a serene forest, or even a quote that speaks to your heart. This section is about reminding yourself to slow down and reconnect with your inner voice amidst life’s busyness.

5. Compassionate Self-Awareness

True wellness starts with self-compassion and knowing yourself. This means recognizing your needs, accepting your flaws, and celebrating your strengths. You can include phrases like “I am enough” or “progress, not perfection” alongside images that represent self-love, such as a person taking a quiet moment with a cup of tea or someone smiling in a mirror. Your vision board should encourage you to treat yourself with the same kindness you’d offer to a friend.

6. Daily Rhythm and Balance

Healthy routines don’t happen by accident, they’re created intentionally. Use your vision board to visualize what a balanced day looks like for you. Perhaps that includes time for work, movement, rest, and joy. Add visuals of cozy morning rituals, balanced meal prep, or even a tidy workspace. This helps you focus on creating a flow that supports your energy and well-being rather than drains it.

7. Sleep and Rest

Good health isn’t just about what we do, it’s also about how well we rest. Include images that remind you of peaceful sleep and restorative downtime: a cozy bedroom, soft lighting, or even simple reminders like “unplug” or “slow down.” Sleep and rest are not luxuries; they’re essential to healing, energy, and mental clarity.

8. Mind-Body Connection

Your mind and body are deeply intertwined, and supporting one often strengthens the other. Images of meditation, journaling, or mindful movement like tai chi or yoga can serve as daily reminders of this connection. You might even add a few affirmations about gratitude, resilience, or inner strength to reinforce the harmony between your thoughts and your body’s needs.

9. Movement, Exercise, and Play

Movement isn’t just about staying fit. It’s also about feeling alive and having fun. Fill this part of your board with activities that you truly enjoy – biking, hiking, dancing, or even something playful like tossing a frisbee. The key is to make movement something you look forward to, not something you feel forced to do.

10. Other: Your Wild Cards

Every life has those special touches that don’t fit neatly into a single category. I immediately gravitate towards the joy of traveling to a dream destination, the love of a loyal pet, or hobbies that bring you alive. These “extras” can often overlap with the other categories. For example, travel might feed your Spirit and Soul, and pets might enrich Relationships and Community. You might even challenge yourself: where do these fit? Which part of your wellness story do they bring to life?

A vision board is more than a pretty collage – it’s a daily reminder of where your heart’s headed. By weaving together all the parts of life that matter, you create more than goals and create a story of the life you want to live. Take your time, pour a glass of sweet tea, flip through a few magazines or Pinterest boards, and choose images and words that light you up. Remember, it’s less about perfection and more about what makes your heart say, “Yes, that’s me.”
