The Farmer’s Almanac has been around since 1818, but not everyone has heard of it. Or if they’ve heard of it, they really don’t understand what it is.  So Unconditionally Her decided to share a little bit about this amazing resource given that fall is almost HERE and we all will be wonderin’ what “Old Man Winter” will have in store for us in the coming months.

The Farmer’s Almanac is an annual publication – which is now online as well – with a wealth of topics ranging from long-range weather predictions for the United States and Canada, calendars, tips on best days to fish, go on vacation, plant a garden, natural remedies, healthy and tasty recipes, and natural home remedies for  a variety of ailments.   The website even lists a tool that allows you to look up all of the weather information for a given day going back to 1945.

Using their own specific – and top secret- formula, which has been reported to include climatology, meteorology, and solar cycles, the Old Farmer’s Almanac’s weather experts claim to be accurate with their weather predictions. According to the Almanac’s website, “The only person who knows the exact formula is the Farmers’ Almanac weather prognosticator who goes by the pseudonym of Caleb Weatherbee. To protect this proprietary and reliable formula, the editors of the Farmers’ Almanac prefer to keep both Caleb’s true identity and the formula a closely guarded brand secret.”

To provide better accuracy, the experts divide the country into 18 different regions, which each have their own forecast. Some meteorologists don’t believe in their methods, though a lot of followers do.  The publication publishes an analysis of their forecast from the previous year.  Unlike commercial forecasters,  the Almanac’s forecasts are calculated several years in advance. They gave themselves a 55.6% accuracy rating in 2016 and a 96.3% accuracy rating in 2015.  The website hasn’t posted their accuracy rating for 2017 yet, but it is sure to be in the just-now-released 2018 almanac.  Many of their followers claim an 80-85% accuracy rate.

Take a look below at what is being forecast for 2018 according to the Farmer’s Almanac and explore the website for a wealth of resources and really cool facts and tidbits!
