Not every Tea and Tidbits adventure begins with plans for tea. Recently, I stopped into Flat Tire Diner in Old Hickory, Tennessee, for the first time simply to check it out. Old Hickory is part of Nashville and also the community I call home, so this was less of a planned outing and more of a little local discovery.
Flat Tire Diner is definitely not a tearoom. There are no rows of tea tins or long menus of blends to choose from. Tea means what it does in most Southern diners: hot or iced black tea. I chose iced tea and, from the pastry case, a strawberry pinwheel topped with strawberry icing and a fresh berry. A refreshing treat on a hot southern summer day. Somewhere between the iced tea and that strawberry pastry, I realized I had unexpectedly found my next Tea and Tidbits story.

The diner itself is full of personality. Photographs and memorabilia featuring tires, cars, and flat tires decorate the walls, all playing off the restaurant’s memorable name. One of the most fun touches is a map where visitors can place a pin showing where they have experienced a flat tire of their own.
And then there is the story behind the name. Before Flat Tire Diner opened, its owners operated a Nashville food truck called The Rolling Feast. After dealing with recurring tire trouble, the truck experienced one particularly memorable mishap on the way home from a food-truck festival: one of its tires actually rolled past the driver on I-40. Ultimately, both rear tires had come off. It was during that decidedly inconvenient experience that the idea of opening a brick-and-mortar diner began to take shape. Flat Tire Diner eventually opened in Old Hickory, turning one memorable roadside mishap into part of the identity of a neighborhood restaurant. That seemed like a pretty good tidbit to go with my tea.

The Tidbit
Life has a funny way of handing us stories when we aren’t looking for them. Sometimes we set out with a plan. Other times we stop into a diner close to home, order an iced tea and something sweet, notice a wall full of flat tires, and discover there is much more to the place than we expected. The same can be true of life itself.
We tend to think the worthwhile moments will be the ones we planned – the trip on the calendar, the special occasion, the reservation made weeks ahead. But some of the best discoveries happen in ordinary places on ordinary days. And sometimes, as the story behind Flat Tire Diner reminds us, even an unwelcome detour can become the beginning of something new.

Not every flat tire leads to a restaurant, of course. But perhaps there is something to be said for staying curious about unexpected turns. They may inconvenience us. They may change our plans. And every now and then, they may lead us somewhere we are very glad we found. There is also something nice about being reminded that we don’t always have to travel far to discover something interesting. Sometimes there is a story, a new favorite place, or even a little inspiration waiting right in our own community.
This August, here’s to unexpected turns, local discoveries, and staying curious about where both might lead.
Tea and happiness always,
