To The Beat

I have a love/hate relationship with the word balance. It’s a word that is often discussed, there have been books written and workshops taught on how to attain “work-life balance” – the idea that one can attain it if following a certain model or practice. I’ve often battled with living in balance and almost always teeter on the borderline of what sometimes feels like organized (or sometimes not!) chaos! The definition of balance is: to equalize in weight, number or proportion. I’m not sure about you but on most days, I don’t feel like I’m always “equal”. There is always something else to do, follow up on, check the box, etc. When I think of it that way, I question if balance is attainable at all? In fact, there is a quote by Sadhguru that says,

“There’s no such thing as work-life balance – it is all life. The balance has to be within you.”

Last year I was asked to speak about this topic to a group of ladies who were aspiring or current entrepreneurs, many of whom also held down a corporate job, were moms, wives, caregivers, etc., like myself. I battled with what I would be able to share that was positive and uplifting knowing that “life is life-ing” and not always easy! While jotting down some speaking points, I was listening to music and began paying closer attention to the beats, the harmonies, syncopations, the melodies. It was in that moment that I likened life to that of a song! To quote Mother Teresa…

“Life is like a song, sing it”

Do me a favor! Close your eyes and listen to this musical snippet from The Little Mermaid.

During the conference, I asked the ladies to listen and their feedback mirrored mine. They experienced struggle and turmoil and were uneasy and on edge. They felt the jolts and twists and turns from the highs and lows of the song. Then at about 1:10, they were at ease and light and happy! The music was suddenly smooth and soothing and refreshing. Isn’t it amazing the emotions music can invoke? In parallel, aren’t many of our days often like this as well? Cheerful and bright with a dash of annoyance and frustration all in one. Depending on the degree to which one may weigh out the other, the balance of it all may fall completely out of orbit or explode through the stratosphere!

Instead of trying to make it all stay in balance, maybe we just need to go with…The Rhythm. The definition of Rhythm is: a flow of rising and falling sounds. Isn’t that really what life is? The high and the low, the ebb and the flow, the awesome and the awful, all at once! I am learning that on the days that I only have 60% to give and I gave 100% of that 60, I won! I am realizing that even if I don’t get everything accomplished on any given day, all is not lost and I can re-prioritize tomorrow. I am learning to accept that I am not in control of most things and to own those things over which I can, to the best of my ability.

Come join me as we explore The Rhythm of Life. We’ll explore this idea as it relates to the mind, body and soul. I’ll share my personal thoughts and experiences along with what I have researched and studied and I invite you to do the same! Let’s have a conversation about all that life encompasses and how we can walk gracefully and gratefully through it. Together.

A few weeks back, I attended a concert where the final artist to perform was El DeBarge. He performed one of his groups ((DeBarge) hits which is, poignantly enough, The Rhythm of the Night. Take a listen and remember when having one of those moments, or days or weeks, just dance…”To the beat of the rhythm of the night.”

When it feels like the world is on your shoulders,
and all of the madness has got you going crazy.
It’s time to get out, step out into the street,
Where all of the action is right there at your feet,
well, I know a place where we can dance all night away underneath electric stars.

Just come with me and we can shake your blues right away, you’ll be doing fine when the music starts, oh

To the beat of the rhythm of the night, dance until the morning light. Forget about the worries on your mind, you can leave them all behind. To the beat of the rhythm of the night,
oh, the rhythm of the night, oh yeah.

Let’s Dance!
