Life’s GPS has a way of redirecting and sending us off in a different direction, putting us on a path with unexpected challenges that shake up our routines, plans, and sense of stability. And who hasn’t been cruising down the scenic route only to have “Betsy” – or whatever you call your GPS- pop up and redirect to an unfamiliar path? Maybe it’s a sudden health issue, a job loss, a family crisis, or another unforeseen change, but navigating these moments can feel overwhelming. But while we can’t always control what happens, we can control how we respond – “taking the high road” on the highway of life!
As a board-certified health and wellness coach, some topics and strategies I cover in my coaching sessions include practical strategies for facing change with resilience, shifting mindset, prioritizing self-care, and taking small, meaningful steps forward -what we call “action steps.” By embracing adaptability and focusing on what’s within our control, we can turn life’s GPS-redirected routes into opportunities for growth and embrace those less-traveled back roads.

Destination Ahead: How to Get There and Have Peace
Acknowledge the Change – Change, wildly unexpected, can stir up a mix of emotions—frustration, fear, uncertainty—but acknowledging these feelings is the first step toward moving forward. Feel your feelings, sit with them, and recognize the change– when you are ready. There is no set time to “arrive” at the destination of acknowledgment. You’ll get there when you get there!
Mindset Matters – The way we think about challenges has a powerful impact on how we navigate them and on one’s health. Cultivating a resilient, adaptable mindset can make all the difference, as our mind can help or hinder our health and well-being (Parsamanesh & Vysochyn,2024). When working with my health and wellness coaching clients, I help them re-think perspectives and build their confidence, which impacts their mindset. One of my favorite visuals is the cat looking in the mirror and seeing a tiger looking back. I looked at this a lot while going through some of the “detours” I encountered while trying to complete my Ph.D. program, which was five long years! Having the right mindset can help us see setbacks as temporary and surmountable, motivating us to keep going. And our confidence may be improved through a mentality that tells us, “I’ve got this!” For more on resilience, read my September 2024 article, Building Resilience – When Life Gives your Lemonade.
Reframing the Situation – Reframing is a strategy I introduce in health and wellness coaching that can lead to a shift in mindset and powerful and positive change. Instead of seeing unexpected change as a roadblock, shifting your perspective can help you uncover new possibilities and personal growth. When cruising down the highway of life and you are handed lemons, you don’t have to make lemonade—but you might as well do something with them, even if it’s just pulling over and adding them to your sweet tea. Reframing can be powerful!
Prioritizing Health During Change – Stressful situations can take a toll on physical and mental health, making it even more important to prioritize self-care and compassionate self-awareness during times of transition. Last month’s article, Have a Heart – Compassionate Self-Awareness, was on this very topic. If you haven’t yet read it, check it out. It’s up to YOU to take care of YOU. And you’re worth it!
Control What You Can – You may not stop the storm, but you can grab an umbrella and choose which puddles you step in. While some aspects of change are beyond your control, focusing on small, actionable steps can help you regain a sense of stability and purpose. In health and wellness coaching, we focus on what we can control rather than what we cannot, promoting a proactive and empowered mindset. What small steps can you take today to get you to the next “exit”?

Small Action Steps for Progress – Even the most minor steps forward, like establishing a daily routine or setting a straightforward goal and action step to achieve that goal, can create momentum and help you adjust to new circumstances. You don’t have to have it all figured out at once—baby steps count, even if today’s win is drinking enough water or getting to bed on time. Check out my August 2024 article, One Small Step, Big Results – the Power of the Action Step, on setting action steps and see how this powerful tool can work for you.
Identifying Challenges – Identifying potential challenges early on allows one to think through how to tackle them head-on and create contingency plans if needed. Successfully navigating these challenges can build self-confidence, which can have a snowball effect and leave us better equipped to handle changes thrown our way as we continue to work on being our best selves.
Support Systems Are Key – You don’t have to navigate change alone—leaning on trusted friends, family, or professionals can provide guidance and reassurance. Even the strongest of us need a good friend, a warm hug, or someone who’ll remind them they don’t have to figure it all out today. Identifying support systems is a significant first step, but also important is following through and asking for help when you need it!
Embracing the New Normal – Change may reshape your path, but accepting and adapting to your new reality can lead to unexpected opportunities and personal transformation. You may not wind up on that beautiful beach where you were headed, but instead, you find yourself on a pier and boarding a ship taking you to an even more attractive destination.
